In a compelling call to action, Ola Olukoyede, Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has urged Nigeria's youth to channel their technological talents into positive and productive endeavors rather than succumbing to fraudulent activities. This message was delivered during the Nigerian Youth Stakeholders’ Conversation in Abuja, an event centered on the theme: Digital Economy Transition: Pathway to Global Competitiveness.

Represented by Wilson Uwujaren, Director of Public Affairs at the EFCC, Olukoyede emphasized the vast opportunities within the digital realm for young Nigerians to showcase their tech skills constructively. Uwujaren highlighted the pressing need to shift focus from criminal misuse of technology to its application in fostering economic development and personal advancement.

“Our nation is blessed with incredible technological talent,” Uwujaren noted. “From fintech innovations to various tech-driven sectors, Nigeria stands out in Africa for its rich resourcefulness. However, this potential is overshadowed by the misuse of technology for fraud. It’s crucial that we redirect this talent to enhance our national and economic stature.”

Olukoyede underscored that Nigeria’s global reputation is at risk due to cybercrime. The persistent misuse of digital platforms to deceive and defraud not only tarnishes the country’s image but also impedes its progress. He called on responsible citizens and stakeholders to unite with the EFCC in combating cybercrime and restoring Nigeria’s integrity.

Addressing the moral underpinnings of these issues, Olukoyede urged a return to foundational values. He lamented the troubling trend where sudden wealth among youth goes unquestioned, reflecting a broader societal shift away from core ethical principles. “There’s a critical need to revive our foundational moral values,” he asserted. “In our society, no ethnic group celebrates dishonesty. It’s time to reinforce the values that underpin a just and equitable society.”

Blessing Oyefeson, President and Convener of the program, echoed these sentiments in her opening remarks. She praised the event as a response to the aspirations of Nigerian youth, highlighting their potential to lead the country forward. “Future leaders must collaborate with regulatory bodies, policymakers, and social impact leaders to explore alternative pathways for national development,” Oyefeson stated. She emphasized the importance of engaging youth with stakeholders to create an environment conducive to their success in the digital economy.

Ololade Ogunnubi, representing the Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiative, Titilope Gbadamosi, outlined the federal government’s commitment to youth empowerment. Under President Tinubu’s administration, several initiatives have been launched to bolster the digital capabilities of Nigerian youth. These include digital literacy campaigns, the establishment of tech hubs to encourage innovation, and support systems for tech startups.

“The future is undeniably digital,” Ogunnubi declared. “Our goal is to build an environment where every Nigerian youth can excel in the digital economy. We are dedicated to providing the necessary tools, resources, and opportunities for success.”

The message is clear: Nigeria’s youth hold the key to transforming the nation’s digital landscape. By harnessing their technological skills for positive impact, they not only pave the way for personal success but also contribute to the broader goal of national progress. The government, alongside various stakeholders, stands ready to support them in this journey, emphasizing that the future truly lies in their hands.
