Every January 15th, Nigeria commemorates Armed Forces Remembrance Day—a day dedicated to honouring the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in service to the nation.

The day is set to remember the service of veterans who fought in World Wars I and II, as well as those who selflessly served during the Nigerian Civil War. Originally celebrated on November 11th, the date was shifted to January 15th in 1970 to commemorate the end of the Nigerian Civil War.

This year's ceremony saw Nigeria's Vice President, Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for a colourful ceremony at the Eagle Square in Abuja—to pay tribute to the fallen heroes. This annual event, observed at all levels of government and every nook of the country, reminds Nigerians of the sacrifices made by these fallen soldiers in defense of this country.

Today, we honour the efforts of Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru, former Chief of Army Staff, who tragically lost his life in a plane crash in 2021. Other fallen heroes whose names will continue to beat through the hearts of Nigerians include Brigadier General Dzarma Zirkusu, who lost his life while fighting Boko Haram in 2021, and Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Abu Ali, a renowned commander who died in 2016 while bravely fighting against the same Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria's Borno State, and Tolulope Arotile, the first female Nigerian combat pilot, who tragically passed away in 2020.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an occasion that holds so much significance for the country that is Nigeria—honouring the courage and sacrifice of its military personnel.

For patriotic Nigerians, it's a day for reflection, gratitude, and a renewed commitment to supporting the families of the fallen heroes and strengthening the capacity of our military personnel.
